The process

Why and how does coaching work?

As a Wayfinder Life Coach, I assume that every person is an expert of their own life. This means that you are in control of your own life. No one but you knows your needs and desires as well as you do. The solutions lie hidden within you, sometimes difficult to access through years of socialization that encourages each person to adapt to the social group and culture in which they live. As a coach, I can help you bring to light what you need and what you long for deep down and how to get there through powerful questions and different coaching methods. Many of these methods allow you to gain access to your subconscious mind without losing control. The subconscious mind is responsible for the majority of our thoughts and can enable or block change.

In coaching, you consciously reflect on yourself and the insights you gain from answering the connection with your subconscious. As a coach, I help you to keep track of certain situations where you are too emotionally involved or trapped in the daily grind. I hold space and listen to you deeply, helping you to see things clearly and with some distance.

Every coaching session with me is based on observing your facial expressions, gestures, tone of voice and general posture to help you to understand yourself better. I will help you calm your nervous system from stressful or anxious states to a relaxed state. From there, you can dismantle limiting beliefs, define clear goals, and steer toward them.

What does a coaching session involve?

First, we determine the topic that concerns you the most, i.e. the area of life you want to improve and the outcome we are heading towards in each session. During the coaching, I support you in defining and achieving your personal goals by looking forward together and using your resources. As a coach, I ask you specific questions, listen carefully and, if necessary, fall back on proven coaching methods.

I will inspire you by sharing certain hunches with you, which will make you think and possibly set impulses that have an effect on you during and also after our sessions. Everyone goes their own way at their own pace, and the whole process is individual and continuous.

How many sessions do I need?

My experience has shown that coaching topics can be successfully worked on in just a few sessions, with a session lasting 60 to 75 minutes and a process usually consisting of 6 to 12 units. The goal is always the achievement of a defined goal, often covering several topics from different areas of life.

What is coaching and what is not coaching?

Coaching is

  • A partnership (defined as an alliance, not a legal business partnership) between the Coach and the Client.

  • Coaching services are designed to facilitate the creation/development of personal, professional, or career goals and to develop and carry out a strategy/plan for achieving those goals.

  • Coaching includes no guarantees or warranties, expressed or implied, about any results to be achieved.

Coaching is not

  • Coaching is not therapy, counseling or advice giving and is not a substitute for psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, mental health care, substance abuse treatment, legal, medical or other professional services.

  • Coaching does not prevent, cure, or treat any mental disorder or medical disease and it is the Client’s responsibility to seek such independent professional guidance as needed.

Responsibility

As the coach, I will maintain the ethics and standards of professional behavior established by the International Coach Federation (ICF). The ICF Code of Ethics is available here: https://coachfederation.org/code-of-ethics. You as the client, are responsible for personal, physical, mental, and emotional well-being and are solely responsible for decisions, choices, actions, and results.

Difference between Coaching, Psychological Counseling and Psychotherapy

Coaching represents a unique form of partnership that develops between the coach and the client. The focus is on developing personal or professional goals and finding suitable strategies to achieve these goals. This creative process aims to support you in finding your individual path. There are no guarantees for specific outcomes – the responsibility for implementing the steps lies with you.

In my approach, I combine coaching with psychological counseling. While we explore your own answers through targeted questions in coaching, I also offer methods from systemic therapy. These include techniques such as parts work, systemic constellations, inner child work, and the regulation of the nervous system through various physical exercises. These methods can help you recognize and resolve unconscious blockages and help you handle stressful situations.

In contrast to psychotherapy, which deals with the treatment of mental disorders, neither coaching nor psychological counseling is a therapeutic approach. It is important to emphasize that coaching cannot replace psychotherapy or professional medical care.

I am not a licensed psychotherapist; however, I am happy to assist you in connecting with professionals if you feel that your challenges go beyond what we can address in coaching and therapeutic counseling. Together, we will find the support you need. 😊
